Theodore P. Fraser

Mar 28, 1934 - Oct 13, 2025

Theodore (“Ted”) P. Fraser was a lifelong scholar of French language and literature. A Fulbright Fellow in Grenoble and a Brown‑trained PhD in Romance Languages, he taught at institutions across the country before establishing a distinguished career at the College of the Holy Cross, where he chaired the Department of Modern Languages and was known for his warmth, humor, and deep commitment to his students.

After retiring in 2001, he returned to his native Maine, where he remained active in his love of writing and teaching, pursuing new translation and editing projects from his cherished home beneath the pine trees in Kennebunk.

Ted authored seven books, including The French Essay and The Modern Catholic Novel in Europe, and later translated works on French Catholic resistance during World War II, among them Chronicles of Resistance and Deportation: Jacqueline Pery d’Alincourt and Her World by François Berriot.

He continued his work in the humanities with characteristic dedication and generosity of spirit until his passing in October 2025.
